Frequently Asked Questions

Who is involved in this project?

The Slade Archive Project is a research project between UCL Slade School of Fine Art and UCL Centre for Digital Humanities centred on exploring and developing the Slade Archive. You can follow us on our blog, facebook and twitter.

If you are interested in having a particular photo digitised, or in supporting the Slade Archive Project more generally, please get in touch at slade.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk

How do I contribute?

We are trying to identify each sitter in these class photos. If you recognise an individual, hover your mouse over their portrait and click, then an individual page for that person will appear. You can then type their name in the comment box, preferably in this format: [Surname], [Given name]. You can also add other comments. Your comment may be moderated so if it does not immediately appear, it requires modification. We will be checking comments regularly and incorporating them into the index so your addition should appear within a short time.

The images are too small! Can I see a detail of a person's portrait?

Yes! Place your mouse on top of any of the faces in each group photo and a larger version of the image should appear. Clicking on the image will take you to an individual page for that portrait.

However, the amount of detail that can be seen is limited by the quality of the original photographs so in some instances, magnification will result in blurred photographs. Unfortunately there is no way to overcome this limitation.

I have hovered my mouse over an image but it doesn’t seem to recognize or capture the face I’d like to identify.

Face recognition software applied to group photographs such has its limitations and in some instances, the software will not automatically recognize facial features. Please email us slade.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk if you encounter this problem, indicating where in the photograph the sitter is located, and we will manually identify the face in the system to allow you to identify it.

I prefer to send my information about identified sitters to the Slade. Is this possible?

Yes! Please feel free to send us details of sitters you can identify – by email [slade.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk][enc] or by post to:

You've identified someone incorrectly. Can I make a correction?

Yes! Leave a comment on the portrait page of that person, and we will correct it.

I am having trouble leaving a comment. Where can I find help?

We are using disqus powered comments. You can login to disqus using a disqus, facebook, twitter or google account. Disqus provides some guides if you are having trouble commenting with disqus, logging into disqus or just using disqus comments generally.

I’ve read these FAQ and am still having technical difficulties. What next?

Do let us know of any further technical difficulties you are experiencing by emailing slade.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk, providing as much details as you can, including the web browser you are using. Please note that as this project has limited funding and resources, it may take some time to respond to your query. Thank you for your patience.

Can I order a Slade class photograph?

If you would like to order a class photo, please download and complete this order form and return to Olivia Mills o.mills@ucl.ac.uk or post to the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT.

I have a photograph that you are missing from your collection. I would like to donate the photograph to the Slade or I am prepared to lend it to you to be scanned for your collection.

Thank you! We are trying to complete the collection of annual photographs and we welcome additions. Please email slade.enquiries@ucl.ac.uk providing details of the photograph and noting if you would like to donate the original photograph or lend it to us to be digitised. Please note that as this project is operating on limited funding and resources, so it may take some time to respond to your message.
